Skin Rejuvenation Reversing the Signs of Aging

    • Botox® can be effective in erasing wrinkles, decreasing sweating and reducing headaches and muscle spasm, but Botox® is a serious medication.  Dr. Sekula Gibbs is among the most educated and skilled practitioners of Botox® in the area.
    • IPL Photofacial Intense Pulsed Light can be highly effective for brown spots, blood vessels and rosacea on the face, neck and chest.
    • Fillers such as Radiesse®, Restylane®, Juvederm™, Perlane®, Sculptra® and Cosmoplast® can be quick ways to reduce wrinkles and sagging skin, marionette lines or "parentheses".  When utilized with proper anesthetics fillers can administered quite comfortably.
    • Chemical Peels Jessner's/TCA, Glycolic, Beta, Vitalize and Enzyme peels can be useful ways to reduce fine lines, wrinkles and blotchy sun-damaged skin.   Down time varies with the depth of the peel. Sun protection every morning and retinoids and/or alpha hydroxy acids at night are an important parts of preparing for the peel maximizing your results.

Skin Cancer

As a board certified dermatologist, a board member of the American Society of Mohs Surgery, a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and a fellow of the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Dr. Sekula Gibbs is highly trained in effective ways to treat skin cancer.  Her goal is to eliminate the cancer while providing you with the best cosmetic result and the least down time.

Skin Cancer is a growing epidemic that strikes one in five Americans.   If you have a spot that is changing or a sore that won't heal Dr. Sekula Gibbs will be pleased to examine it, biopsy the spot if indicated and the prescribe the appropriate treatment. With over 20 years experience in dermatology and skin surgery, Dr. Sekula Gibbs will provide you with the information you need to make a sound decision about your skin cancer.

TYPES OF SKIN CANCER

  • Melanoma is a potentially aggressive skin cancer that can metastasize or spread internally if not removed quickly and completely.  Watch out for changing moles or dark spots that suddenly appear.   Learn the ABCDE's of Melanoma.
    • Squamous Cell Carcinoma is developing more frequently in Americans.  This may be because of the use of immunosuppressive drugs, such as those used in organ transplant patients.  Squamous cell carcinoma usually arises in sun damaged skin and affects over 200,000 Americans each year.
    • Basal Cell Carcinoma is the most common cancer in America affecting over one million Americans each year. Look for shiny, pink bumps that gorw, scar like areas that appear without explanation or sores that won't heal. BCCs are most common on sun exposed skinl.
    • Actinic Keratoses are precancers that develop on sun exposed skin. AKs feel rough like stickers or crusts on your skin.  After freezing AKs with liquid nitrogen, Dr. Sekula Gibbs will often recommend a regimen of sunscreens and topical retinoids or other acids to help prevent new precancers from developing.

    Treatment of Skin Cancer

    • Mohs Micrographic Surgery Dr. Sekula Gibbs has practiced Mohs surgery in the Houston area for over 20 years.  As a member of the American Society for Mohs Surgery she adheres to high standards for the using this successful technique.  Mohs surgery is a precise method for treating agressive or recurrent skin cancers or skin cancers occurring in cosmetically sensitive areas such as lip, nose ears or eyelids.  This Mohs procedure combines surgical removal of cancerous tissue by Dr. Sekula Gibbs, in her CLIA certified office, with microscopic examination and immediate identification of the cancer and the area it has invaded.  Mohs surgery provides up to a 96%-98% cure rate for primary basal cell skin cancer.  By creating the smallest possible defect Mohs surgery patients have an improved opportunity for an excellent cosmetic result.
    • Excision Surgery is useful for first-time skin cancer and can give excellent cure rates and good cosmetic results.
    • Curettage and Dessication is a tried and true way to remove non-melanoma skin cancer.  Although no margins are checked it may be quite useful for nodular or superficial basal cell carcinoma. C&D usually results in a smooth white scar.
    • Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen freezing can be useful for smaller non-melanoma skin cancers. Although no margins are checked cryotherapy may be appropriate for certain patients.
    • 5-Fluorouracil, 5FU (Effudex® or Carac®) or imiquimod (Aldara®) are creams that can be used to treat certain skin cancers, especially those occurring on flat areas, like the back, chest and arms. These medicated creams are sometimes used after surgical removal of skin cancer to reduce recurrences.

Acne, Hair Loss, Excess Hair, Hormone Imbalance

    • When severe cystic acne threatens to scar a young patient's face isotretinoin (Accutane®) may be indicated. Dr. Shelley Sekula Gibbs is a certified by the FDA iPLEDGE program to prescribe isotretinoin. For moderate or mild acne, Dr. Sekula Gibbs will prescribe a regimen for your particular skin condition and type.
    • Losing one's hair (alopecia) can be emotionally traumatic, a sign of underlying disease, or a part of the genetic plan coded in your DNA.  Various tests may be indicated to evaluate hair loss.  With proper treatment, such as minoxidil (Rogaine) or finesteride (Propecia®) the process can sometimes be stopped and may even be reversed.
    • Unwanted facial or body hair can diminish a persons self-esteem.  The first order of business is to determine the root cause of excess hair growth called hirsutism.  Hormone studies may be necessary in certain patients.  Medical and laser treatments may be combined to give the best and the most long lasting results.  LightSheer® is considered by many to be the "gold standard" in laser hair removal for all skin types even tanned and very dark skin. Excess hair can also be treated with eflornithine (Vaniqa®).

Diseases of the Skin - Warts and Molluscum, Psoriasis, Lichen Planus, Eczema, Lupus

    • Human skin can be effected by a multitude of conditions.  As a board certified dermatologist, Dr. Shelley Sekula Gibbs is trained to diagnose and treat diseases of the skin, hair and nails.  She will be happy to assist you and your family with your cutaneous quandaries.
    • Liquid nitrogen and salicylic acid plasters for warts. Topical steroids, immune modulators, histamine modulation and hypoallergenic moisturizers for eczema.
    • Systemics for Serious Skin Diseases- Methotrexate, Acitretin (Soriatane®), Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine®), Cyclosporine (Neoral®), Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil®), Vitamin D, etc.
    • Biologics for Psoriasis, Psoriatic Arthritis and other potentially life-changing skin diseases - Etanercept (Enbrel®), Adalimumab (Humira®), Infliximab (Remicade®), Efalizumab (Raptiva®), Alefacept (Amiveve®), etc.
