Skin
Rejuvenation - Reversing the Signs of Aging
- Botox®
or Dysport® can be effective in erasing wrinkles, decreasing sweating
and reducing headaches and muscle spasm, but these are serious medications. Dr. Sekula Gibbs is among the
most educated and skilled practitioners of Botox and Dysport in the
area.
- DiamondTome
Microdermabrasion can smooth rough, dry skin;
rejuvenate aging face, chest, back and hands; open pores and
improve texture.
- IPL
Photofacial Intense Pulsed Light can be highly
effective for brown spots, blood vessels and rosacea on the
face, neck and chest. When combined with Levulan, a liquid that increases the penetration of light into the skin, the IPL can improve actinic keratoses and acne.
- Fillers
such as Radiesse®,
Restylane®,
Juvederm™ and SculptraAesthetic® can be quick ways to reduce
wrinkles and sagging skin, marionette lines or "parentheses".
When utilized with properly fillers can administered
quite comfortably.
- Chemical
Peels Jessner's/TCA, Glycolic, and Salicylic Acid peels can reduce fine lines,
wrinkles and blotchy sun-damaged skin. Down time varies
with the depth of the peel. Sun protection every morning and
retinoids and/or alpha hydroxy acids at night are important
to prepare your face and optimize your results. Remember to supplement Vitamin D and calcium if you are not getting much sun exposure.
Beautifying
Your Legs
Spider
& Varicose Vein Sclerotherapy and Laser Vein Removal
Unsightly veins can mar even the most
attractive legs. As a longstanding
member of the American College of Phlebology and a board certified
dermatologist, Dr. Sekula Gibbs has the training and experience
to treat spider and varicose veins with advanced technologies.
Annoying brown spots may be removed with the LightSheer laser.
Rough skin growths can be identified and diagnosed by Dr. Sekula-Gibbs and when appropriate frozen off or polished away with
microdermabrasion. Retinoids and alpha hydrozy acids are helpful to reduce recurrences of skin growths.

Cancer
As a board certified dermatologist,
a board member of the American
Society of Mohs Surgery, a fellow of the American
Academy of Dermatology and a fellow of the American
Society for Dermatologic Surgery, Dr. Sekula-Gibbs
is highly trained in effective ways to treat skin cancer.
Her goal is to eliminate the cancer while providing you with
the best cosmetic result and the least down time.
Skin Cancer is a growing epidemic that strikes one in five
Americans. If you have a spot that is changing or a sore
that won't heal, Dr. Sekula Gibbs will be pleased to examine
it, biopsy the spot if indicated and then prescribe the appropriate
treatment. With over 20 years experience in dermatology
and skin surgery, Dr. Sekula Gibbs will provide you with the
information you need to make a sound decision about your skin
cancer.
TYPES OF SKIN CANCER
- Melanoma
is a potentially aggressive skin cancer that can metastasize
or spread internally if not removed quickly and completely.
People who have a family member with melanoma, have a large number of moles, have light colored eyes or light hair or have used indoor tanning machines, are at increased risk of developing melanoma. Watch out for changing moles or spots that suddenly appear.
Learn the ABCDE's of Melanoma.
- Squamous
Cell Carcinoma is developing more frequently
in Americans. This may be because of the use of immunosuppressive
drugs, such as those used in organ transplant patients.
Squamous cell carcinoma usually arises in sun damaged skin
and affects over 200,000 Americans each year.
- Basal
Cell Carcinoma is the most common cancer in America
affecting over one million Americans each year. Look for shiny,
pink bumps that grow, scar like areas that appear without
explanation or sores that won't heal. BCCs are most common
on sun exposed skin.
- Actinic
Keratoses are precancers that develop on sun
exposed skin. AKs feel rough like stickers or crusts on your
skin. After freezing AKs with liquid nitrogen, Dr. Sekula
Gibbs will often recommend a regimen of sunscreens and topical
retinoids or other acids to help prevent new precancers from
developing.
Treatment
of Skin Cancer
- Mohs
Micrographic Surgery Dr. Sekula Gibbs has practiced
Mohs surgery in the Houston area for over 20 years.
As a member of the American Society for Mohs Surgery she adheres
to high standards for using this successful technique including annual quality assurance testing.
Mohs surgery is a precise method for treating aggressive or
recurrent skin cancers or skin cancers occurring in cosmetically
sensitive areas such as face, lips, nose, ears or eyelids. This
Mohs procedure combines surgical removal of cancerous tissue
by Dr. Sekula-Gibbs, in her CLIA certified office, with microscopic
examination and immediate identification of the cancer and
the area it has invaded. Mohs surgery provides up to
a 96%-98% cure rate for primary basal cell skin cancer.
By creating the smallest possible defect Mohs surgery patients
have an improved opportunity for an excellent cosmetic result.
- Excision
Surgery is useful for first-time skin cancer
and can give excellent cure rates and good cosmetic results.
- Curettage
and Dessication is a tried and true way to
remove non-melanoma skin cancer. Although no margins
are checked it may be quite useful for nodular or superficial
basal cell carcinoma. C&D usually results in a smooth
white scar.
-
Cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen freezing
can be useful for smaller non-melanoma skin cancers. Although
no margins are checked cryotherapy may be appropriate for
certain patients.
- 5-Fluorouracil,
5FU (Effudex®, Fluoroplex® or Carac®)
or imiquimod
(Aldara®, Zyclara®) are creams that can be used to treat certain skin cancers,
especially those occurring on flat areas, like the back, chest
and arms. These medicated creams are sometimes used after
surgical removal of skin cancer to reduce recurrences.
Helping
Troubled Skin Become Healthy Skin
Acne,
Rosacea, Hair Loss, Excess Hair, Hormone Imbalance, Hidradenitis Suppurativa, Trichotillomania, Skin Picking
- When severe cystic acne threatens to scar
a young patient's face isotretinoin (Accutane®) may be indicated. Dr. Shelley Sekula Gibbs is a certified
by the FDA iPLEDGE program to prescribe isotretinoin. For
moderate or mild acne, Dr. Sekula Gibbs will prescribe a regimen
for your particular skin condition and type.
- Losing one's hair, known as alopecia, can be emotionally
traumatic. Although often a normal part of aging as
determined by your genes, hair loss can be
a sign of physical disease. Various tests may be indicated
to evaluate your hair loss, including blood work, scalp biopsy
and, more recently, a simple cheek swab (HairDx)
that gives information about your genetic likelihood to develop
hair loss. With proper treatment, androgenetic alopecia
can sometimes be stopped and even reversed. Minoxidil
(Rogaine),
spironolactone (Aldactone) and/or finesteride (Propecia®)
may be useful.
- Unwanted
facial or body hair can diminish a person's self-esteem.
The first order of business is to determine the root cause
of excess hair growth called hirsutism. Hormone studies
may be necessary in certain patients. Medical and laser
treatments may be combined to give the best and the most long
lasting results. LightSheer®
is considered by many to be the "gold standard"
in laser hair removal for all skin types even tanned and very
dark skin. Excess hair can also be treated with eflornithine
(Vaniqa®).
- Hidradenitis
Suppurativa
HS causes painful boils and abscesses to form in the groin and underarms theoretically due to blocked apocrine glands. Treatment of HS is difficult - while lancing is not routinely effective and cultures are usually sterile, draining can sometimes provide relief while intralesional steroids often reduce swelling and tenderness. Topical and oral antibiotics, Accutane (isotretinoin), and surgical excision have a role. Excision of the inflamed area may be effective and should be done before sinus tracts spread, if possible. Studies have shown mixed results from anti-androgen therapy and little benefit from finesteride (Propecia) or methotrexate. Immunosuppressants such as systemic steroids, cyclosporine, dapsone, and TNF blockers like etanercept (Enbrel®), adalimumab (Humira®), and infliximab (Remicade®) have been reported to be useful in individual cases. Pain management is important. More information can be found at the Hidradenitis Suppurativa Foundation website.
- Trichotillomania and
Skin Picking
Compulsive hair pulling known as trichotillomania and compulsive skin picking can be difficult problems for both adults and children. A dermatologist can make the correct diagnosis but often a psychologist or psychiatrist is needed to design a behavioral program to bring about long term improvement such as Stop Picking.com
